What The HEC | Snake Awareness

Thanks to Geoff from Living with Wildlife and Rudy from Adelaide Snake Catchers, for sharing a fascinating and exciting afternoon with a room full of venomous snakes! Who knew that here in Australia we have >110 terrestrial snake species, 35 marine species, 47 blind snakes and 15 pythons. And SA is home to 30 species of venomous snakes! Here in the Mount Lofty Ranges, you can expect to see the Pygmy Copperhead, Tiger, Little Whip, Red Bellied Black and Eastern Brown snakes. It was wonderful to see them live and wriggling around the floor at the HEC, what beautiful creatures they are! Geoff has an incredible knowledge about their diversity, biology, ecology and taught us all how to treat a snake bite…. call emergency, stay completely still, wrap with a compression bandage.
