What The HEC | ERA – e-waste recycling

HEC Hills Environment Centre Recycling

Electronic Recycling Australia (ERA) will take any electrical item which has a cord/ requires a battery for power, excluding large white goods. For metro Adelaide, to find your nearest E-waste recycling location, see the ERA website Unplug ‘n Drop. For your information, an informative e-waste video is available here. E-waste is banned from kerbside collection in South Australia- for more information on this see here. Laptops can be taken directly to ERA to be refurbished and sold (rather than recycling). The proceeds of these sales go directly to MINDA.

Currently ERA are recycling about 12-20% of e-waste generated in SA, so still lots of room for expansion!

ERA are also recycling mattresses, so please contact them directly to discuss options.

In terms of batteries (which ERA currently do not accept), your local library or civic centre may have collection points for batteries, otherwise Aldi, Battery World, Officeworks and Ikea all offer battery drop-off schemes for battery recycling. Otherwise, you should be able to take these to your nearest transfer station for recycling. Please do NOT put batteries into any kerbside bin as they are a fire hazard and ensure any batteries taken to specialty drop off points have taped ends to avoid live elements sparking against each other.  There is a lot of information regarding battery recycling and the different types of batteries on the East Waste Tricky Items page.

Note the HEC is a collection point for batteries, light globes, pill packs, dental waste and small e-waste.
